Last half term, our Year 5/6 pupils have been studying the artwork of Caroline Appleyard – a contemporary artist based in Derbyshire. Caroline spends most of her time travelling around in her camper van, painting and drawing wherever she goes.
With a focus on Whitby, the children sketched images of the harbour, the Abbey, the Whalebone, houses and even quirky touches such as Dracula, buses, people, seagulls and much more.
After sketching out their final pieces, the children used watercolours to create a wash of beautiful sky, thinking about sunset, stormy, peaceful and relaxing as their themes. They then used watercolour to begin painting their landscapes.
The children have shown resilience, creativity and even added a little comedy in their work to truly represent Whitby in the style of Caroline Appleyard. Well done!
